Diapers aren’t a “them” issue…it’s an “us” issue. An “all of us” issue. When it comes to poverty issues, people who aren’t experiencing poverty often perceive themselves as different from those that are experiencing poverty. This mindset is harmful and leads to misunderstandings, blame, and lack of empathy towards those that are struggling. The reality is that nearly 1 in 2 families (47%) in the US struggle to afford diapers for their children. With diaper need so pervasive across the country, this issue highlights how the high cost of a basic need puts so many of us in the same situation. In addition, diaper need isn’t experienced only by the lowest income earners in our country…28% of families experiencing diaper need are considered middle income. In fact, 6% of families experiencing diaper need are considered high income. This tells us that diapers are an expense that families all across the income spectrum struggle to afford. So how do we break down the “us versus them” narrative and bridge that gap? It’s awareness, it’s communication, and it’s community-wide efforts to address poverty. For diaper need, reflect on the data that tells us how ubiquitous diaper need is in all of our communities. Realize that diaper need is an “us” problem, and get involved in helping all of us. Volunteer at your community diaper bank (hi, Athens area friends!), donate diapers or dollars, and spread the word. And if you visit a someone with a new baby, for goodness’ sake, bring some diapers. Athens Area Diaper Bank, like many diaper banks across the country, is making a difference in the lives of families by providing more than just diaper changes. We do this using our partner agency model of diaper distribution. This approach is highly efficient and impactful for several reasons:
Diaper rash, a common woe for infants, becomes a dire concern when linked to diaper need—the struggle to afford an adequate supply of diapers. This connection exposes the harsh reality faced by many families living in poverty. Diaper rash, typically triggered by prolonged exposure to wetness and friction, is exacerbated when families can't afford enough diapers. Without a fresh supply, babies suffer through discomfort and irritation, risking prolonged skin issues. Diapers are costly, often straining already tight budgets. Families in diaper need may resort to rationing or reusing diapers, heightening the risk of rash, infection, and other health problems. The financial strain can force tough choices between diapers and other basic needs like food, clothing, and transportation. Another complicating factor of diaper need that can contribute to diaper rash is the use of DIY diapers made out of household items like old t-shirts, rags, and plastic bags. These household items may not be absorbent or gentle enough, increasing the risk of leaks, discomfort, skin irritation, infection, and diaper rash. In addition, the risk of loose fabric, fasteners, and plastic can be a major safety hazard for babies. Addressing diaper need isn't just about providing diapers; it's about breaking the cycle of poverty. Diaper banks like the Athens Area Diaper Bank help to improve the health and general well-being of families, as well as their financial stability. By tackling diaper need head-on, we can ensure that every child stays clean, dry, and healthy, regardless of their family's financial circumstances.
